Academics

St. James School is proud of their academic excellence.  Year after year our students score in or near the top 10% of the nation in our standardized test scores.  The required academic areas for Catholic elementary schools are:  religion, language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening), mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education.

Report cards are issued quarterly at ten week intervals.  The primary and upper grade report cards will vary in format and in style of reporting.  In an effort to insure timely communications, mid-quarter reports are issued to grades 4-8 during periods between report cards.

Students in grades 4-8 who maintain a high scholastic average, good effort and conduct are eligible for the honor roll.  The purpose is to recognize students for their academic achievement and to encourage everyone to excel.  Students may achieve High Honors which means the student holds a 93% average with no grade below 90%.  Students may also achieve Honors which means the student holds a 90% average with no grade below 85%.

In order to ensure quality instruction and provide for the individual needs of each student, classes in grade 4-8 are departmentalized.  Each subject area curriculum for each grade level is described in length in the Curriculum Handbook.
